Atlantic County Awards Contract
For Tilton-Pomona Intersection Improvements

Atlantic County has awarded a $2.7 million contract for the reconstruction of the Tilton and Pomona Road intersection in Hamilton and Galloway townships. The project will include the widening of both approaches to provide shoulders and left turn lanes and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2008.

"We are anxious to start working on improvements to this busy intersection to help ease congestion and improve public safety. This project has been a priority of my administration. Although it has presented its share of challenges, our perseverance has endured," stated County Executive Dennis Levinson. "Anyone who has been stuck in traffic in this area knows the significance of these improvements."

The county began the project in 2002 as part of an overall plan to alleviate traffic congestion by widening Pomona-Wrangelboro Road to four lanes to create a north-south corridor between Route 40 in Hamilton Township and Route 30 in Galloway Township. But the project was delayed for years by the discovery of six rare and endangered species during the requisite environmental study. Further federal and state approvals were then required.

The reconstruction of the intersection has been scheduled in several phases to keep disruption of traffic to a minimum, according to Levinson. While peripheral work will begin shortly, the major road work will not occur for a few months.

"We have worked closely with the two municipalities and area businesses to minimize any inconvenience. We trust that motorists will remain cooperative," Levinson said
