Michaela Coel is returning to television with First Day on Earth, a new drama for HBO and BBC, following the success of I May Destroy You. Coel not only stars in the series but also serves as its writer and director. The story centers on Henri, a British-Ghanaian novelist played by Coel, whose personal struggles push her to leave her life behind.

The 10-episode project is already in production and features a strong ensemble cast — joining Coel are Ncuti Gatwa, Thandiwe Newton, Maxine Peake, and Danny Sapani. Gatwa takes on the role of Darren, Newton plays Anya, Peake portrays Helen, and Sapani appears as Ernest.

Set largely in Ghana, the series explores identity, belonging, and self-discovery as Henri navigates unfamiliar surroundings, new relationships, and complicated truths about her past. The official logline states: “British-Ghanaian novelist Henri (Coel) is on the run – from herself, her life, her partner, and that weird guy at her book talk. When she ends up in Ghana, her ancestral homeland, she finds herself submerged in an altogether different world. Amidst new friends, fresh joy, and many different and nuanced relationships, Henri also finds secrets, lies, difficulty, and denial, leading her to question everything about herself, her heritage, and her family.”
