Sunday Side Up Weekly Special: "Stand" by R.E.M.John Lockwood
After leaving I.R.S. Records and moving to the Warner Brothers label, "Stand" by R.E.M. was the first hit single from the album Green. Lead singer Michael Stipe and the rest of the Atlanta, Georgia- based band were listening to and discussing the bubble- gummy hits of The Archies, The Banana Splits and others... and "Stand" was the result of their efforts. In fact, Mike Buck of R.E.M. calls it "the stupidest song we've ever written... not necessarily a bad thing."
Fun Fact: "Stand was originally released in January of 1989. The second issue, released later that year, includes a live cover of "Skin Tight" by 70s funk group Ohio Players... !
Weird Fun Fact: "Stand" was parodied as "Spam" on Weird Al's UHF Soundtrack LP.
