The first national celebration of Decoration Day took place May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery, where both Confederate and Union soldiers were buried. On that day General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Civil War soldiers buried there.

Now Memorial Day with ceremonies and parades nationwide honoring the hundreds of thousands of Americans killed in all wars. Today also marks the unofficial start of the summer season with backyard BBQs music festivals fireworks and more.
